Leh/Ladakh is the highest plateau in India with most of it being over 3,000 m (9,800 ft). Ladakh was established as a union territory of India on 31 October 2019, following the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. Prior to that, it was part of the Jammu and Kashmir state. 1. Pangong Tso

  • Famous For : Firstly, Tso means lake in tibetan language. Pangong Lake, situated at a height of almost 4,350m, is the world’s highest saltwater lake. Its water, which seems to be dyed in blue, stand in stark contrast to the arid mountains surrounding it. It is also shown in many movies. The lake colour changes in morning , afternoon and in evening because of sun’s position and the reflection of sky and mountains.
  • Best time to visit : The best time to visit Pangong Lake is during summers i.e. from May to September as weather during winter is intense and the lake would be frozen.
  • How to reach Pangong Tso : Pangong Tso can be reached after a five hour drive from Leh via Chang La.  Most tourists who wish to go to Nubra Valley also choose to reach Pangong Lake from Nubra Valley via Wari La. This route is less explored but offers an incredible experience to travelers.

2. Nubra Valley

  • Famous For : Nubra Valley is the northernmost part of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated about 150 km from Leh, Nubra Valley is known as the Orchard of Ladakh and was originally called Ldumra which meant the valley of flowers.
  • Best time to visit : April to June and September to October is the best time to visit Nubra. If you want to chill in some warm weather than go in april to june months  and if you want to experience some chilly or snowy weather than go in september – october. After October, the Khardung La often closes down due to excessive snowfall or rains.
  • How to reach Nubra Valley : There is no direct way to reach Nubra. Firstly you have to go to Leh by air or by road. From Leh Nubra is about 150 km which will take around five hours. From Leh you can take either bus or car to reach to Nubra Valley.

3. Khardung La

  • Famous For : Khardun la or Khardungla pass is a mountain pass located in the leh district of Indian Union Territory Ladakh. It is an high altitude mountain pass located about 40km from Leh and is a gateway to Nubra Valley. Before Umling la it was the world’s HIGHEST MOTORABLE ROAD PASS.
  • Best time to visit : April to June and September to October are the best months to visit khardungla pass. The pass remains closed from July to August and November to Feburary.
  • How to reach Nubra Valley : You can reach khardungla by road from Leh . It is aroung 40 km from Leh.

4. Shanti Stupa

  • Famous For : It is one of the popular tourist attraction in leh/ladakh. It has become popular not only due to its religious significance but also due to its location which give a panaromic view of its surrounding specially the leh city view. The Shanti Stupa display the Buddhist style of architecture. Shanti Stupa looks exceptionally beautiful during the full moon night when it is naturally illuminated by the moonlight.
  • Best time to visit : Best time to visit Shanti Stupa is either on sunrise or on sunset and the timings are 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • How to reach Shanti Stupa : Shanti Stupa is around 4 km from leh. One can reach shanti stupa by road from leh.

5. Gurudwara Pathar Sahib

  • Famous For : Pathar Sahib Gurudwara is located at an altitude of 12,000 feet. Gurudwara Pathar Sahib was built in 1517 to commemorate the visit of Guru Nanak Dev ji to Ladakh. A large number of tourists visit this religious and historic shrine while travelling to Magnetic Hill Point, Sangam Point, Alchi or Kargil.
  • Best time to visit : Best time to visit Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is the time when you visit Leh/Ladakh i.e. from May to September/October.
  • How to reach Gurudwara Pathar Sahib : One can reach Gurudwara Pathar Sahib from Leh by road. It is around 25 miles away from Leh town on Leh Kargil Highway.
